16/9 - Baseball in Japan

Today was a day without much work. Woke up at 5AM for some odd reason, and couldn’t go back to sleep. Had brekkie a few hours later, and then we drove obaa-chan to town so she could get a haircut for when she goes with town’s retired peeps (OAPs? old people, lol) to Beppu (I think it was) in a week’s time. Meanwhile, otou-san and I went to the post office and had a chat with the photographer (the one who wants a picture of me, which he by the way still wants).

Then we went home, had lunch, and during the break I went on a bike ride to the central part of town, just to hang around. Found a playground where I spent a little time doing some random stuff.

When I got home, obaa-chan and I were about to go get some kuri (chestnuts); however, otou-san had a visitor, so we ended up going inside and had a chat and some tea and watermelon. THEN we went to get kuri, and I got stung by a LOT of ka (mosquitos). Good thing about Japanese ka is, that it doesn’t itch for very long; you really can’t get to scratch it so badly that it' starts bleeding, like I’ve done several times at home.

After that we dug up some imo (potatos), and then… nothing really. I went for a bike ride again, afterwards watched some tv, and now I’m here. Think I’ll sleep well tonight. Funny thing is though, that I don’t really feel yesterday’s long bike ride in my legs, as I had expected. Good thing though!

NOW for some pictures!

This is something I found pretty interesting (taken at the playground). Most sports in Japan are written i katakana (the alphabet the Japanese use for words taken from another language. Tennis, golf, soccer, basketball etc. are all written in this alphabet, BUT the perhaps most popular sport in Japan, baseball, is written in kanji (and hence also has a Japanese name, “yakyuu”), the picture characters originally from China (the two first characters are Chinese, and the little ones above them are “furigana”, the word’s pronounciation written in hiragana, the Japanese alphabet used for grammar constructions etc. Confused? That’s ok…)
- Ok, so what I’m trying to say with this is, that baseball is old enough a sport in Japan to have gotten its own Japanese name!

The awesome spider living not far from my room (outside the house though, phew!). It’s about… 5-7 cm? Pretty big, and pretty pretty :b

And I’ll let this be the end ;o)
