1/10 – Countdown PART 1

I thought I’d take some time and write a little, plus throwing in some pictures.

I don’t have many plans for today; my feet are pretty sore from walking 10+ hours each day, so maybe I’ll be taking it a little easy today; do some laundry and stuff.

Oh well, I’ll show you some pictures from my travel from Taketa to Oita to Beppu to Fukuoka.

Junko-mama’s cousin took me to a nearby temple with actual monks living there. Was pretty cool.

Inside

The kitchen. There’s 20-30 monks currently living in the temple.
P1000974 P1000977

A shrine I visited with Junko-mama’s daughter, cousin and the cousin’s daughter.
P1000979

This year is the year of the tiger. Toratoshi (tiger year)
P1000982

I learned how to visit a shrine. You throw some money in a bit box, bow twice, ring the bell, clap twice, make a wish, bow.
P1000984

Throw 100 yen in another little box, and draw your fortune. Mine was very. very good, they said.
P1000987

Usually, you tie the fortune paper here, but they said it would be ok for me to bring it with me home. ALSO, I asked what the little wooden plates were, and I was told that it’s people’s wishes. One of them were someone wishing to pass an exam; so there you have your explanation, mum!
P1000989

It was quite pretty. The strong, bright red color has its own name, but I forget what it is.
P1000991

Junko-mama, the cousin and her daughter treated me to lunch in Beppu where I was left on my own to stay at a hostel.
On my walk around town, I passed this at a eye glass shop. I’m pretty sure I saw a similar machine in one of Danny Choo’s blog posts; it’s a ocular cleaner. Yeah, sink it in the water, mysterrious rays are sent through the water that magically cleans your glasses.
P1010013

At night; a pachinko hall. I went in, and left pretty quickly. Damn, what a noise! It’s some game with a lot of metal balls.
P1010035

I passed a Korean restaurant, a rabbit and a tiger wearing traditional Korean clothing… made NO sense to me…
P1010040

- until I saw this. “Usagi to tora no some-kanji-I-can’t read”, which means “Rabbit and tiger’s something”. On second hand, that’s still a strange name.
P1010041

29th – leaving Beppu to Oita

A Pidgey! Quick, where’s my pokéball?! –Actually it just tells you not to feed the pidgeons…
P1010043

My Japan Rail Pass!
P1010048

After reaching Hakata station, I bought some gum. It looked pretty, but was kinda blah…
P1010052

Feeling a little limp? Have some Protein Water!
P1010054

HottoMotto bento. It looks so cheery!
P1010056

Finally reached the hostel.
P1010057

Visiting Canal City with Barry, the Scottish guy.
P1010062 P1010070

We went all the way up; how about a car park on 6th, 7th and 8th floor?
P1010072

A view over the city.
P1010075

A gaming archade. I’d lose my brother here… And yes, it’s Rambo.
P1010078

More night view.
P1010082

30th

A figure I got from the kind, old man in Taketa. It breaks my heart to do it, but I think I’ll have to throw it out…
P1010086

Felt adventurous and tried out this suspicous looking drink. Waste of 120yen.
P1010087

Brought my pal with me today. I know what some of you are gonna say, but at least I didn’t walk with him on my head.
P1010091

An Indian restaurant I passed; another presentation of Japan’s fake foods!
P1010100

Curry is popular in Japan…
P1010108

How ‘bout a nashi for 45 kr? I’ve even seen worse. You can easily find fruit for over 1000 yen per piece.
P1010110

Passed some geisha/maiko on my way. I didn’t manage to get their song on video…
P1010119

Something you’d most likely NEVER see me wearing…
P1010126

8 floors is standard in Fukuoka
P1010128

Went into a 5 story manga/figurine store. Cwazy cwazy… several rows of manga, almost as many games, collecting cards, figures and whatnot.
P1010134

While riding the escalators, I leaned out to see how far there was down, not thinking about the fact that I had HEST on the shoulder I leaned towards! OH NOES! ö
- Luckily, he was caught by the safety net; phew!
P1010147

Happy reunion!
P1010151

Oh yes, and Ayanami Rei is very popular, along with Suzumiya Haruhi. Only seen surprisingly little of Hatsune Miku…
P1010145

Out again; this is the first time I come across this kind of vending machine! You put in your money, push the button with the dish you want, get your order ticket, go in and wait until it’s ready. Have to try it some time!
P1010153

City views; unfortunately, my camera doesn’t really do it justice.
 P1010178

P1010164

A little snack; boiled green soy beans called “edamame”! They’re really good!
P1010180

What a shame I didn’t get that Pidgey… could have restored its HP here! The theme music from the gameboy game when you enter a Pokecenter was even playing!
P1010181

A Danish bar… pastry
P1010199

Phew! Part two will come tomorrow!
